Job summary

Salt Lake Community College is seeking Peer Mentors to support the Bruin Scholar Program and its students. You will help coordinators stay connected with students and assist in social and academic event planning.

The position is part-time, roughly 10–20 hours per week, with a negotiable schedule and required office hours. Candidates should indicate on their resume whether they are seeking full- or part-time work and must be eligible to work in the United States.

Qualifications

• Must be a current SLCC student.
• Must be eligible to work in the United States.
• Must maintain a Utah address within 30 days of start date.

Responsibilities

• Participate as a team member of the Bruin Scholars Program Office by: Continuous follow-up with students to assist them in locating resources and encouraging enrollment; directing them to an advisor for academic concerns.
• Research and create activities to encourage learning and involvement in SLCC.
• Familiarity with SLCC enrollment and registration processes.
• Familiarity with Banner and MySuccess to locate information and assist Orientation holds.
• Track student interactions.
• Other duties as assigned by coordinator.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

Participate as a team member of the Bruin Scholars Program Office by:

• Continuous follow-up with students in the Bruin Scholars program to assist them in locating needed resources; encouraging them to continuously enroll in school; directing them to an advisor for any academic concerns.
• Researching and creating activities to encourage learning and involvement in SLCC.
• Being familiar with SLCC enrollment and registration process.
• Being familiar with Banner and MySuccess to locate needed information and assist the office with Orientation holds.
• Track student interactions.
• Other duties as assigned by coordinator.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Peer Mentors must:

• Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with a wide range of diverse individuals.
• Demonstrate excellent customer service skills, cultural competencies, and sensibilities.
• Work collaboratively with other office staff, a variety of campus departments and community personnel.
• Utilize basic computer operating systems and SLCC’s computer systems (Banner, DegreeWorks, Ring Central, MySuccess, Teams, Loops, and Sharepoint).
• Demonstrate professionalism.
• Knowledge of HB 144 and other Undocumented Student resources.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must have a 2.0 GPA or higher
• Must be a current SLCC student
• Must be eligible to work in the United States
• Eligible for Work-Study (FAFSA)

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will go to candidates who are:

• A current and active Bruin Scholar
• Demonstrate strong public speaking skills
• Bilinqual or multi-lingual
