Job summary

Laramie County Community College is seeking a part-time Student Assistant to support the STEM Mobile Science Lab outreach and educational programming. Job description

*This position is only open to students who are Federal Work Study eligible.*

The STEM Mobile Science Lab Student Assistant is a part-time, non-benefitted position that supports STEM outreach and educational programming throughout the service area by assisting with the operation of the Mobile Science Lab. This position provides hands-on support for outreach events, science activities, equipment preparation, and interaction with students, educators, and community members. The Student Assistant plays an important role in promoting STEM education and creating positive learning experiences for participants, particularly elementary-aged students.

Compensation: $13.33/hr.
Priority Screening Date: Position is open until filled.
Starting Date: As soon as practical after the hiring process.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
  • While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required
  • There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • An employee must frequently lift and/or move 10 - 15 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be instances of somewhat loud environments when working with certain tools and outside environments.
  • The work environment is mainly outdoors and inside the mobile trailer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study employment.
  • Admission at LCCC and continued enrollment in a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester(Exceptions may be given for summer term with supervisor approval).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with children, particularly elementary-aged students.
  • Dependable, responsible, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow directions and maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Willingness to learn STEM-related activities and educational demonstrations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), or education.
  • Experience working with youth, tutoring, mentoring, or participating in outreach activities.
  • Experience with customer service, public engagement, or event support.
