Patton State Hospital is seeking a Student Assistant – Music Therapy Intern. This temporary position involves working under the supervision of certified professionals, requiring knowledge of Music Therapy and mental health principles. Patton State Hospital, Human Resources Department is accepting applications for Temporary (6 month), Intermittent, appointments to the Student Assistant – Music Therapy Intern classification. The Student Assistant - Music Therapy Intern is supervised by a Board-Certified Music Therapist and works under the clinical supervision and general lead of the Music Therapy Internship Director and the administrative supervision of the Chief, Rehabilitation Therapy Service.
The successful candidate must be academically eligible for Music Therapy Internship based upon completion of requisite coursework and pre-internship clinical hours through a university program approved by the American Music Therapy Association.
Candidates should possess and demonstrate basic knowledge of the principles, procedures, techniques, trends, and literature of Music Therapy services, as well as knowledge of the process of restoration, maintenance, and development of capabilities. They should also understand the principles of mental health education, characteristics of mental, emotional, physical, and developmental disorders, and current trends in mental health and public health. Ability to utilize and effectively apply required knowledge, establish and maintain confidence and cooperation, secure accurate clinical data, compose clear reports, interpret statistical data, analyze situations, and communicate effectively are essential.
Additional Information: The classification is a temporary TAU appointment, and the Student Assistant may not work more than 1500 hours in a 12-month period. No health, dental, or vision benefits are provided for persons in this classification.
Special Requirements: The position requires a 5–10-minute live audition during the interview to demonstrate functional music skills in singing while playing guitar and keyboard.

Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital established in 1890 and opened in 1893. It provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.
