Job summary

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic (Structures) to perform carpentry, painting, and structural repair work across buildings and related facilities.

Expect visual inspections of fire doors, walls, ceilings, and floors, and to repair on a Journeyman level while adhering to safety standards. Responsibilities include installing and repairing metal/wood structures, plaster work, flooring, and interpreting blueprints and maintenance requests.

Qualifications

• Evidence of training or experience sufficient to perform the duties, as described in the qualifications section.

Responsibilities

• Constructs, alters, repairs, and modifies items made of metal, wood, and wood substitutes.
• Assembles/disassembles - installs - repairs and modifies steel stud framing - wood and wood structures per drawings and codes.
• Mixes and finishes plaster and applies to walls/ceilings; considers lathing and weather conditions.
• Patches and repairs plaster or stucco; finishes gypsum walls with joint compound and tape.
• Removes and installs flooring and tiles in medical offices/locations with special considerations for activity and infection control.
• Maintains/repairs/renovates interior/exterior structures built from concrete, block, tiles; spreads mortar, cuts and lays blocks.
• Reads plans/blueprints/drawings; follows verbal/written instructions and maintenance requests.
• Applies materials or paint using brushes/rollers/spray guns; achieves finishes.
