GRAEF in Chicago is offering a Structural Engineer Internship beginning Summer 2027, inviting students pursuing Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis to join a collaborative team on varied bridge and building projects. You will learn design and documentation, gain experience with Revit, and support on-site inspections, with mentoring and a flexible schedule in a supportive environment.

Hourly pay ranges $22-$24 and opportunities to grow professionally in a leading U.S.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural emphasis.
• Pursuing a Master's degree in Structural Engineering would be a plus.
• Internship experience in structural building or bridge design/inspection is preferred.
• Ability to grasp new concepts and eager to learn new things.
• Balance of independent tasks and team collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Learn design and specifications for a variety of building structures.
• Assemble design documentation, reports, and quantity calculations for checking.
• Use of Revit for construction documentation and coordination with project team members.
• Learn design and specifications for transportation structures, including highway and railroad bridges, retaining walls and box culverts under supervision.

• Perform structural inspection of bridges and highway structures.
• Work as part of a team within project budget and schedule under supervision.

We have an exciting Internship opportunity available for a student pursuing their degree in Structural Engineering, with an interest in either structural design of buildings or bridges. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work in a collaborative learning environment on a wide variety of bridge projects, from new build to reconstruction projects, and a variety of building projects including healthcare, higher-education, multi-family, hospitality, commercial, industrial and renovation projects. This exciting internship is available in our new Chicago office located at the President’s Plaza, beginning in the summer of 2027.

As a Structural Engineer Intern at GRAEF, enjoy responsibilities like:

• Learn design and specifications for a variety of building structures.
• Assemble design documentation, reports, and quantity calculations for checking.
• Use of Revit for construction documentation and coordination with project team members.
• Learn design and specifications for transportation structures, including highway and railroad bridges, retaining walls and box culverts under the supervision of the lead structural engineer, per DOT requirements.
• Assemble design documentation, reports, and quantity calculations for checking.
• Perform structural inspection of bridges and highway structures.
• Perform work as part of a team, in accordance with project budget and schedule under supervision.

To be considered for our Structural Engineer Internship position, we are seeking candidates who meet the following basic qualifications:

• Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural emphasis in course work.
• Pursuing a Master's degree in Structural Engineering would be a plus.
• Internship experience in structural building or bridge design/bridge inspection is preferred.
• Ability to grasp new concepts and eager to learn new things.
• Enjoy a balance of independent tasks and working with a project team.
• Hourly pay rate is between $22-$24/hour.
