Job summary

The New York State Department of Transportation, Office of Structures, seeks an experienced drafting professional under the NY HELPS program. Incumbents may prepare drawings and computations for structural projects using MicroStation CADD, and develop engineering models for design, visualization, and estimating.

Responsibilities include reviewing contractor submittals, maintaining standard details (BD Sheets, Bridge Manual), performing field investigations, and supporting emergency response as

Qualifications

• Four years of drafting experience including at least one year of specialized drafting experience in structural engineering.
• Certificates from a Trade or Technical school accepted only if regionally accredited or recognized by NYS Department of Education.

Responsibilities

• Prepare drawings of moderate to complex difficulty for structural engineering projects using MicroStation CADD software.
• Prepare and check engineering computations of moderate to complex difficulty.
• Prepare and check quantity estimates.
• Perform field investigations to collect or confirm data.
• Develop and utilize complete physical engineering models for design, clash detection, visualization, construction coordination, contract plan preparation, and estimating.
• Prepare and maintain the Department standard details for bridges (BD Sheets) and the Office of Structures Bridge Manual.
• Review contractor submittals for construction and fabrication of structural elements.
• Special assignments to address management needs.
• Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, architecture, or architectural technology

Associate’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, architecture, or architectural technology AND two years of drafting experience including one year of specialized drafting experience in structural engineering

Certificate in computer-aided drafting issued by a regionally accredited college or university AND two years of drafting experience including at least one year of specialized drafting experience in structural engineering
