Job Description

Do you have transferrable experience for the Structural Designer/Inspector 2 position, a positive attitude, and are looking to join a highly collaborative and people-focused company?

The Structural Designer/Inspector 2 position is responsible for applying standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform assigned tasks as part of a larger assignment.

The Structural Designer/Inspector 2 acquires general understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities and works on multiple projects simultaneously. A Structural Designer/Inspector 2 also acquires general knowledge of principles and practices of structural engineering and other related fields, thus functioning as a member of a multidisciplinary team. A Structural Designer/Inspector 2 works on multiple projects simultaneously.The amount of supervision decreases as experience and judgment increase.

Typical Duties:

· Complete or review structural design computations, sketches, reports, costs, and prepare complete project documents. Designs a complete project, system, or component under the supervision of a more senior designer or engineer

· Ensure adherence to design standards and criteria

· Identify less complex design issues and notify supervisor as they arise

· Develop full sets of structure drawings and/or check structure drawings against the completed design and standards.

· Review fabricator shop drawings for compliance with contract documents and design standards under the supervision of a more senior designer or engineer

· Communicate and coordinate design elements as needed with other disciplines team members and, on occasion, external team members

· Represent Susquehanna Civil at networking events and associations; develop client relationships as the opportunity arises. May fill in as a Susquehanna Civil alternate or accompany a senior engineer at external project meetings.

· Assist with the preparation of file folders for structure field inspections.

· Assist the Senior Team Leader in coordination of Traffic Control (if needed).

· Perform structure inspection fieldwork with Senior Team Leader / Team Leader oversight.

· Write and assemble structure inspection reports with Senior Team Leader / Team Leader oversight.

Skills, Transferrable Experience, & Certifications:

  • Professional License: EIT (preferred)
  • Minimum experience: 4+ years
  • Certification: Certified Bridge Safety Inspector

Preferred Skills/Experience:

·Basic understanding of structural design and familiar with PennDOT Design Manuals and Standards.

·Basic knowledge of all fundamental engineering related mathematical disciplines including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.

·Experience using Bentley Microstation CADD systems and PennDOT computer based design programs.

·Ability to exhibit sound problem solving skills.

·Proficient oral and written communication skills; will be expected to clearly communicate issues through written reports and will be expected to communicate effectively with other team members. May represent Susquehanna Civil at external meetings.

·Proven ability to work in a team environment, both within the structures and inspection groups and also with various other groups within the organization.

·Works independently, possesses good time management skills, and critical thinking skills.

·Exhibits self-motivation for meeting schedules and responding to requests.

·Demonstrates organizational skills for use in the production of required structural design deliverables.

·Possesses sound judgment regarding structural design decisions.

·Must be detail-oriented.

· Demonstrates understanding of project schedule/budgets, completes tasks in the assigned duration/timeline and within budget.

·A growing understanding of structure inspection practices and procedures, including assessing challenging field environments.

·A fundamental knowledge of PennDOT requirements for inspection and rating procedures, including related software (BMS3, analysis).

·A growing understanding of the engineering judgment required to make crucial decisions regarding structural determinations (open, closed, post) and/or the need for updated load ratings.

Offered rate of compensation for this full-time position will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. This job operates in a professional office environment.
