Job summary

HDR, Inc. is seeking a Structural Designer/EI to join our hydropower and dam safety practice in Portland, Maine. The role involves performing routine engineering tasks under supervision and preparing design criteria, drawings, and bid packages.

You will support inspections, conduct field visits, and assist in data collection. Growth opportunities include project management and cross‑disciplinary work in mechanical, hydrology, and hydraulics.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or related engineering field.
Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and structural analysis software (RISA, STAAD, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE, or similar).
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and handle multiple assignments successfully.
Strong time‑management skills.
Local candidates preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform routine engineering assignments with instruction from the Project Engineer or other senior staff regarding the expected results.
Prepare and/or check design criteria, calculations, drawings, permitting documents, construction specifications and bid packages, and review and evaluate bid packages.
Support inspections and condition assessments of existing facilities.
Conduct field inspections with senior engineers, assist in data collection, and may be asked to perform construction oversight.
Prepare inspection and analysis reports.
Work independently on small projects or assist senior engineers on larger projects.
Perform duties in other engineering disciplines such as mechanical or hydrology and hydraulics as needed.
Engage in desk engineering, field work, and project management as part of a dynamic work environment.
