Job summary

Thompson Engineering in Mobile, Alabama, is seeking a Junior to Mid-Level Structural Designer with AutoCAD and REVIT experience to grow within a collaborative engineering environment. The Structural Designer will assist with structural plans, details, and construction documents for a variety of projects, including bridges, transportation structures, retaining walls, buildings, and waterfront structures.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree or technical certification in CAD, Drafting, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 0–8+ years of structural design or drafting experience
• Experience with AutoCAD required
• Experience with REVIT preferred
• Demonstrated experience supporting bridge, roadway, or transportation infrastructure projects
• MicroStation experience is a plus
• Familiarity with structural drawings, construction documents, or engineering plans preferred
• Ability to interpret engineering sketches, markups, specifications, and design criteria
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate workAbility to learn new software, technical standards, and design processes
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Responsibilities

• Develop and revise structural drawings and construction documents using AutoCAD and/or REVIT
• Assist with development of structural plans, elevations, sections, details, and related design documentation
• Support the design and detailing of bridges, retaining walls, transportation structures, and other infrastructure
• Translate engineering concepts, sketches, calculations, and markups into accurate design drawings
• Work closely with structural engineers and other project team members to support design development
• Learn and apply applicable DOT standards, AASHTO guidelines, building codes, and other project specific requirements
• Perform quality control reviews of drawings and design documents prepared by others
• Maintain organized project files and follow established CAD and corporate design standards
• Develop proficiency in Microstation and other Bentley software as applicable in addition to AutoCAD and REVIT
• Support project schedules, deadlines, and coordination with internal teams
• Participate in training and professional development to expand structural design capabilities
• Perform other duties as assigned to support project and department needs including site visits and field inspections
