Job description

The Consolidated Operations, Management, Engineering and Test (COMET) contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. These tasks support the International Space Station, Exploration Ground Systems, Space Launch System (SLS), Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.

As a member of the Facility Structures Engineering group, you will work directly with engineers responsible for designing and maintaining new and existing subsystems supporting the Artemis missions. Facility Structures at the Vehicle Assembly Building, Mobile Launcher, and Launch Pad are essential for vehicle processing and launch. This includes Launch Accessories and Umbilicals that provide ground-to-flight interfaces, the Crawler transporter that moves the stacked Mobile Launcher from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the Pad for launch, and cryogenics used to fuel the SLS vehicle.

Responsibilities:
  1. Apply engineering skills to perform flight and ground system mechanical engineering projects that meet stakeholder expectations, system functional requirements, and NASA program requirements.
  2. Support the design of mechanical Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and Ground Support Systems (GSS).
  3. Collaborate with NASA and contractor design teams to modify existing GSE/GSS mechanical systems.
  4. Prepare conceptual design packages, conduct feasibility studies, technical assessments, cost estimates, and develop requirements for new and existing system modifications.
  5. Create and implement component and subsystem design verification/acceptance plans and test methods to validate performance and obtain design certification.
  6. Interface effectively with customer representatives and ensure task completion on schedule and within budget.
  7. Maintain professional knowledge through workshops, publications, networking, and participation in societies.
  8. Contribute to team efforts by achieving related results as needed.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering or a technical equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Note: Depending on experience, requirements, and business needs, candidates at any level may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with GSE and GSS supporting spaceflight vehicle launches.
  • Knowledge of NASA-KSC design development processes and requirements.
  • Experience designing components and systems in hazardous environments, specifically Class 1 Division 2 zones.
  • Proficiency with CAD software such as CREO.
  • Knowledge of work authorization tools like Maximo or Solumina.
  • Experience with product lifecycle management software such as Windchill.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience working in team environments and ability to present to management and customers.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, internet browsers, and Outlook.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance if necessary.
