Job description

GAI Consultants, Inc is seeking an Entry Level Engineer to work out of our Bridgeport or Charleston, WV office within our Transportation Business Unit. The successful candidate will be eligible for a sign-on bonus and enjoy working in a challenging, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment that will utilize their college education and related work experience to develop professionally into a well-rounded engineer with the ability to grow in today's global environment.

Job Duties:

  1. Design bridges and other transportation structures such as overhead sign structures or retaining walls while working closely with a professional engineer. Typical duties include engineering designs and analyses to size structure components and connections; geometric layout of structures; development of bid package documents including quantity and cost estimates; construction plan development; and assembling of construction specifications.
  2. Participate in technical and feasibility studies by developing an understanding of appropriate specifications, standards, and design criteria.
  3. Serve as a field inspector on NBIS inspection teams in Pennsylvania and neighboring states.
  4. Obtain and maintain NBIS inspection certification. Contribute to NBIS-related documentation including reports, recommendations, and client communications.
  5. Take responsibility for participating in field operations in a safe and healthy manner.
  6. Pursue professional development including working toward a professional engineering license.
  7. Collaborate with engineering professionals from various departments and disciplines to meet client needs.
  8. Use computer engineering programs and CAD to develop detailed designs.
  9. Receive and respond to coaching and mentoring by higher-level staff.
  10. Occasional seasonal travel for bridge inspection with overnight stays.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Local/regional travel may be required based on client needs; occasional travel responsibilities should be accepted.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited civil/structural engineering program.
  • Passing score on the FE examination.
  • Self-motivated to ask questions, pursue understanding, and develop professionally.
  • Proficiency in geometric and computational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in technical writing and drawing.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation preferred.

General Characteristics:

  • Possesses foundational engineering concepts through undergraduate education.
  • Develops basic skills through mentored experience.
  • Applies learned knowledge and skills to perform assigned tasks.
  • Performs routine technical work without previous experience required.

Minimum Years of Experience: Entry / 0+

Education: B.S. or M.S. in Engineering

Certification/Licensure: Passed FE exam and obtained EIT or EI certification.

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Collect data and gather information or documents.
  • Participate in laboratory testing and field investigations.
  • Perform basic computations or analysis.
  • Assist in preparing engineering deliverables.
  • Observe construction activities.

Project and Task Management:

  • Manage personal tasks and adhere to deadlines and scope.
  • No managerial responsibilities at this level.

Management Responsibility:

  • Receive close supervision on all aspects of assignments.
  • Mentorship from a licensed engineer.

Communication Skills:

  • Basic oral and written communication skills. Recognizes principles of teamwork and leadership.
  • Primarily interacts with internal project team members.
