Job summary

Job description

Job Summary

Develops and implements an approved program for strength and conditioning applicable to the intercollegiate athletics program as well as the general population at Chowan University. Responsibilities include training, scheduling and supervising student‑athletes strength and conditioning, oversight of the maintenance of all equipment and developing and monitoring personal training programs for specific individuals within the student community. Assures appropriate maintenance of equipment and supplies assigned to the strength and conditioning area; maintains records on examination and physical conditioning of student‑athletes. This position reports directly to the Athletic Director.

Essential Functions
  • Leadership, oversight and implementation of strength and conditioning programs on a year-round basis.
  • Oversight of yearly budget and purchasing for weight room in consultation with the Director of Athletics as well as scheduling the maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Compliance with all NCAA and Conference rules as they relate to the Department of Strength and Conditioning.
  • Foster a positive and motivating workout environment and culture. Instruct, monitor and evaluate the strength and conditioning, speed and agility programs for all sports.
  • Ensure fundamental instruction and safety for student‑athletes. Ensure and teach proper safety measures and proper oversight of weight training facilities.
  • Communicate and collaborate with coaches on a regular basis to facilitate scheduling, organizing, and training needs and goals of the respective sport programs.
  • Design, implement, teach and demonstrate team and individual strength and conditioning programs based on position, skill level and coaching staff expectations.
  • Direct and instruct any graduate assistants and/or interns, volunteers and work‑study personnel on all sports performance‑related issues.
  • Provide presentations to student‑athletes and parents during on‑campus recruiting visits.
  • Orient and enforce adherence by student athletes and assistant coaches to the policies and procedures of the University, Department of Athletics, NCAA and affiliated athletic conference/organizations.
  • Available to work nights and weekends, if necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Certification as a Strength and Conditioning Coach or be eligible for certification (e.g., CSCS, NASM PES, or CSCCA SCCC).
  • First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Basic competency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as required, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative environment.
  • Ability to counsel student‑athletes on requirements for personal conduct, academic performance and athletic participation to include good sportsmanship.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Education And Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Sports Sciences, Kinesiology or related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the strength and conditioning discipline.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Position will occasionally require medium to heavy lifting up to one-hundred (100) pounds as well as pushing, pulling and bending. The position is expected to be certified in safety related to the sport and be able to provide weight spotting expertise to ensure safety.
