Job summary

City of Odessa, Texas is seeking a basic labor worker for the Public Works Department to maintain streets, roadways and city infrastructure under basic supervision, operating vehicles and equipment in compliance with safety procedures.

Duties include street maintenance, clearing foliage and debris, drains and vacant properties, and cross-training in PWD skills. A Texas driver license is required; Class B CDL is preferred and you may obtain it within one year.

Department: Street Reports to: Street Supervisor

Summary: Under basic supervision, performs a variety of basic labor tasks to maintain streets, roadways and City infrastructure for the Public Works Department (PWD); operates vehicles, equipment and tools in compliance with all safety regulations and standard procedures.

Essential Functions

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following

  • Assists in maintaining and repairing streets, roadways, and infrastructure, in compliance with PWD safety regulations and procedures; duties will vary according to job assignment.
  • Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks; assists with street maintenance, clears foliage and debris and cleans drains and vacant properties; cross-trains in a variety of PWD skills.
  • Maintains and operates PWD vehicles and equipment according to Department standards.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries.
  • Supports the division operations with regular and timely attendance.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High school diploma or GED preferred. Some related work experience is desired. Knowledge of:

  • Basic traffic control and safety procedures and regulations.
Skill In
  • Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Following standard operating and safety procedures.
  • Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers
Physical demands and working environment

Work is performed indoors, outdoors and at City facilities; requires constant physical efforts, and the ability to bend, reach, stoop and lift objects; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment. City approved safety shoes must be worn.

All applicants must have a basic level of speaking and understanding English in order to meet the minimum qualifications for this position.

License and certification requirements

Must possess a Texas Driver's license. A Texas Class B CDL is preferred but if hired without one will be given the opportunity to obtain within one (1) year of employment.

Salary: $20.37 per hour
