Job summary

The City of Bedford is seeking a Maintenance Worker to help keep municipal streets and right-of-way in good repair. You will perform routine street maintenance, assist with equipment operation, and support safety by following procedures and traffic control measures.

Responsibilities include responding to work orders, preparing surfaces for weather, and assisting other Public Works divisions as needed. Valid driver's license required; CDL and Work Zone traffic control certification within 1 year

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; related experience preferred.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License; ability to obtain Class B CDL within 1 year.
  • Work Zone Traffic Control certification required within 1 year of hire.

  • Maintains and repairs streets, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
  • Installs guard rails and delineators for traffic safety.
  • Assists with tree/debris removal and weather-related prep.

  • Maintains safe traffic conditions and site cleanliness.

Job description

SUMMARY

Maintains and repairs municipal streets and right-of-way by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Receives written work orders or verbal instructions from Street Crew Chief, Equipment Operator, or Senior Maintenance Worker.
  2. Maintains and repairs asphalt and concrete surfaces of streets and their curbs, gutters, drive approaches and sidewalks.
  3. Installs and repairs guard rails and delineators along roadways for traffic safety.
  4. Assist with the removal of trees and debris from roadways.
  5. Completes pavement and sidewalk preparation/treatment for inclement weather.
  6. Operates equipment such as street saws, routers, air hammers, trucks, power saws, and hand tools.
  7. Cleans and maintains tools and equipment as required.
  8. Maintains safe work and traffic conditions throughout the street repair process and cleans work site before leaving or opening to traffic.
  9. Assists other divisions of the Public Works Department as needed, including standby and emergency callback.
  10. Will perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.
  11. Regular and timely attendance is required as well as the ability to get along with others in a professional and cordial manner.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma / GED. Some related experience and/or training preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Valid Texas Driver's License
  • Ability to obtain a Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License within one (1) year of hire
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Work Zone Traffic Control certification within one (1) year of hire
LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

SPECIALIZED KSA’S

Working knowledge of street, water, wastewater, and drainage maintenance procedures and equipment operating practices.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to work in areas where there is vehicular traffic nearby. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock. The employee regularly works in confined spaces and in trenches. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
