Job summary

SpartanNash, based in San Antonio, TX, seeks an experienced Transportation Operations Manager to lead the transportation functions, coordinating with warehouse, maintenance and customer service to ensure safe, timely deliveries.

The role requires an Associate degree in Logistics (or a related Bachelor's) and 5 years in transportation planning with supervisory experience. Travel up to 15% may be required; a robust Total Rewards benefits package is offered.

Qualifications

Associate degree (Required) in Logistics. (Or bachelor's degree) in Transportation Supply Chain Management or related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Five years transportation planning/logistics/dispatch experience.
Ability to work a flexible schedule and must be available on-call during evening and weekend hours as needed to address issues.
Experience with transportation operations and related systems, governmental safety and regulatory compliance (DOT/CSA, OSHA, etc.).
Two years supervisory/management experience.
Strong knowledge of transportation/logistics; understanding of dispatch, DOT/CSA requirements, backhauls, contract carriers, Bill of Lading, Manifest, etc.
Knowledge of transportation onboarding software; experience with Cadec or Omnitracs preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Organization, prioritization and multi-tasking skills.
Leadership abilities with hands-on environment.
Analytical, decision-making, problem-solving and business acumen skills.
Ability to work across business units and with vendors in time-sensitive environments.
Proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Travel up to 15% as necessary.

Responsibilities

Manage transportation operations as assigned, including supervising drivers, dispatching, routing and planning for safe, timely, and accurate delivery.
Coordinate with warehouse, maintenance, and customer service to resolve issues promptly.
Plan and coordinate deliveries, backhauls and for-hire cartage; determine efficient routes and cost-effective shipping methods.
Negotiate rates for third-party services/contract drivers as needed.
Oversee dispatch based on deliveries/shipment schedules to maximize resources and minimize miles.
Ensure compliance with DOT/CSA, OSHA and other regulations; monitor HOS reporting and records.
Collaborate with Fleet Operations and Compliance to ensure safety regulations and equipment maintenance.
Analyze transportation activities and implement data-driven improvements.
Develop and maintain reporting on transportation expenses and performance metrics.
Monitor equipment availability and maintenance; coordinate preventative/corrective actions.
Ensure safe operation and utilization of equipment; address issues promptly.
Work with maintenance to keep tractors/trailers in good condition; schedule inspections.
Promote safety programs and security awareness.
Document and address any incidents per policy and regulatory requirements.
Develop and update policies to improve efficiency and compliance.
Communicate changes to management and transportation team.
Manage transportation operations P&L, including budgeting, cost controls, revenue and productivity objectives.
Foster relationships with warehouse, managed freight, and customers; coordinate schedules and changes.
Participate in labor negotiations and contract administration as needed.
Oversee staffing, training, performance management and career development of associates.
