Job summary

Schuff Steel Company in Humble, TX seeks an experienced Purchasing Agent to manage procurement and supplier relationships for steel fabrication. The role focuses on sourcing materials, negotiating contracts, and ensuring timely deliveries to meet production goals.

You will oversee inventory, coordinate with production, and implement cost-control measures while maintaining quality and compliance with ASTM standards. Five years in steel purchasing is preferred.

• Specialized Knowledge – Certificates & Licenses: Familiarity with basic purchasing principles, steel construction materials, BOMs, mill buying parameters, SOX buying requirements, LEED/EPD as appropriate.
• Software & Technology: Frequent use of MS Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, Blue Beam PDF, Oracle.

Responsibilities

• Procurement and Supplier Management: Source materials, negotiate contracts, manage supplier relationships, monitor performance, budget controls, obtain quotes, evaluate suppliers, purchase all materials to schedule.
• Inventory Control: Monitor stock, forecast demand, minimize costs, coordinate with production to prevent shortages/overstocking, implement JIT strategies, track material usage.
• Logistics and Delivery Coordination: Schedule deliveries to align with fabrication timelines, arrange freight, track shipments, resolve delays.
• Purchase Order (PO) Management: Create and issue POs, verify quantities and delivery dates, ensure specs compliance, reconcile invoices.
• Coordination with Project Management, Production Planning, Production, and Field: Review BOMs, confirm material grades/certifications per ASTM, communicate lead times, support changes, provide purchasing schedule, offer technical assistance.
• Risk Management: Anticipate supply chain disruptions, develop backup suppliers, manage contract risks and terms.
• Quality and Compliance: Ensure materials meet specs, obtain mill test reports, resolve material discrepancies.
• Process Improvement: Analyze data, identify bottlenecks, develop efficiency strategies, optimize procurement/inventory/logistics workflows.
