Job summary

American Water seeks a Lead, Government Affairs to develop and manage a comprehensive state government affairs program, advancing the company’s business plan and state objectives. You will guide policy narratives, bill drafting, and regulatory engagement, shaping advocacy across the Virginia footprint.

You will build relationships with elected officials, testify when needed, and coordinate with internal teams to ensure aligned public affairs efforts, including PAC governance and outreach.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in public administration, government affairs, journalism, communications, public relations or related field is preferred, or demonstrated experience commensurate with the requirements of the position.
• 9+ years of related work experience of which 4 to 6 years in government relations or lobbying, preferably within the utility sector.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and assessment of an integrated government affairs program to enhance the company's strategy and reputation.
• Establish regular proactive communication outreach strategies with state government to solidify relationships.
• Proactively meet with state and local officials to build relationships and trust.
• Develop and implement government affairs strategy for rate case proceedings and company initiatives.
• Manage contract lobbyists and maximize effectiveness.
• Build alliances and coalitions to advance key legislative initiatives.
• Represent the company at business functions, political fundraisers, and conferences with government audiences.
