Job summary

UT-Battelle's Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks a Communications Specialist to develop and execute strategies that raise visibility of research programs within BESSD. You will serve as the primary communications contact for APPL and related programs, translating complex science into engaging content for policymakers, sponsors, media, and the public.

Qualifications

• BS/BA degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, English, science communication, or related discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible professional communications experience.
• Experience developing and implementing strategic communications plans.
• Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to translate complex science into compelling communications products.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships across organizational levels.
• Excellent organizational and project management skills.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary communications contact for APPL and assigned programs.
• Develop and execute communications strategies highlighting scientific advances and program impacts.
• Collaborate with the BESSD Communications Lead to align with directorate strategy and sponsor needs.
• Translate complex scientific concepts into clear content for diverse audiences.
• Write and edit a wide range of materials (website content, newsletters, social media, articles, press releases).
• Plan and coordinate communications activities supporting milestones, conferences, events, and visits.
• Lead tours of facilities for public audiences and assist sponsor visits with tailored talking points.
