Job summary

City of San José seeks an accomplished Assistant Director of Planning, Building and Code Enforcement to lead operations, drive strategic initiatives, and advance sustainable, inclusive growth.

Reporting to the Director, the role oversees planning, building, code enforcement functions, and engages stakeholders to modernize service delivery and strengthen organizational performance in a dynamic California city.

Qualifications

• Education: bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, or a related field; master’s degree preferred.
• Seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional experience, including five (5) years supervising managers.
• Experience in land use planning, development services, or building/code enforcement is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Executive leadership and strategic management for the department.
• Oversee department operations and administration, budgeting and fiscal management.
• Manage human resources, performance, accountability and reporting.
• Represent the department and engage stakeholders to advance city initiatives.
