Job summary

Homeward Bound of Western North Carolina is seeking an experienced Chief Operating Officer to lead the day-to-day operations, align programs with strategy, and strengthen organizational systems. Reporting to the CEO, the COO will supervise Directors, drive performance, and ensure accountability across departments.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree and 10 years of managerial experience in mission-driven settings.

Qualifications

• Significant senior management experience in a complex nonprofit or mission-driven setting.
• Demonstrated experience managing, supporting and developing senior leaders.
• Track record of improving organizational performance and management practices.
• Experience with program evaluation, performance measures and data-driven decision-making.
• Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to balance organization-wide priorities with detailed operational work.
• Strong judgment and accountability in staffing and policy decisions.
• Collaborative leadership and change-management capabilities.
• Commitment to Homeward Bound’s mission and services for people experiencing homelessness.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the CEO’s deputy and senior internal management partner.
• Supervise Directors and translate priorities into department plans with clear ownership and timelines.
• Foster cross-departmental collaboration and reduce silos.
• Support complex projects and cross-departmental problem-solving.
• Establish governance, reporting rhythms and performance reviews.
• Escalate and address significant risks and issues promptly.
• Provide leadership in HR, onboarding, and staff development.
• Ensure policies and procedures support accountability across programs.
