Job summary

Markel is seeking an Assistant General Counsel for HR Risk & Compliance to shape workplace strategy and mitigate risk by partnering with HR and business leaders on complex employment matters across the insurance platform.

You will lead the HR risk function, investigate sensitive employee relations matters, advise senior leaders on policy implementation, and represent Markel in regulatory proceedings. Strong Bar credentials and 10+ years of US employment law are required.

Qualifications

• JD required; Masters or Bachelor’s degree in HR preferred.
• Active Bar admission in VA, TX, NY, or IL is expected.
• 10+ years’ broad expertise in US employment law and related matters.
• Broad HR compliance knowledge to identify, understand and mitigate HR risk globally.
• Experience engaging business leaders with pragmatic advice while balancing independence of function.

Responsibilities

• Provides legal advice on employment-related and immigration law matters impacting Markel’s US employees; counsels leaders and employees as needed.
• Leads US-facing Employee Relations and investigations; guides managers to resolve issues.
• Partner with HR on planning and executing restructurings, within and outside the US.
• Counsels on EEOC, Title VII, ADA, ADEA and related federal/state laws; develops and implements policies.
• Represents Markel in mediation/arbitration and in responses to government inquiries; records minutes for committees.
