Markel Corporation is seeking an Assistant General Counsel for HR Risk & Compliance to shape workplace strategy and reduce risk across the insurance platform. You will partner with HR and leaders on complex employment matters and lead the US-facing employee relations function.

The role requires a JD, active bar admission in at least one qualifying state, and 10+ years in US employment law with broad HR compliance knowledge. A hybrid US-based work model is available.

Qualifications

• JD required; Masters or Bachelor’s degree in a related field (HR) preferred.
• Active Bar admission in VA, TX, NY, or IL in good standing.
• 10+ years of broad expertise in US employment law.
• Broad HR compliance knowledge across policies, programs, and risk controls.
• Ability to advise senior leaders and balance legal requirements with business needs.
• Excellent written and verbal communication for regulators, auditors, and teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead US-facing employee relations for Markel’s insurance businesses; manage a Senior Employee Relations Manager.
• Coordinate complex, sensitive investigations and advise managers on resolution.
• Partner with HR leadership on business restructurings and strategic policy changes.
• Represent Markel in mediation/arbitration and in data requests from government agencies.
