Job summary

Xcel Energy seeks a Resource Planning Analyst at varying levels to develop and run long-range optimization models for generation planning. You will estimate costs, quantify risks, and support executive/regulatory analyses.

The role requires collaboration with Forecasting, Risk Management, Trading, and other groups, including updates to input assumptions and production cost modeling across the utility’s portfolio.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required in engineering, finance, economics, operations research, mathematics or business.
• Two years of energy industry experience or equivalent with large optimization/forecasting models.
• Five+ years for Analyst II; eight+ years plus modeling experience for Senior Analyst.

Responsibilities

• Develop/run/maintain long range resource planning model.
• Ensure accuracy of model input assumptions and verify simulations/optimizations.
• Produce comprehensive quantitative analysis for executives and regulatory filings.
• Implement Monte Carlo simulations around significant uncertainty to identify total system cost variance.
• Interface with Forecasting, Risk Management, Trading, Gas/ Coal Supply, Transmission Operations and others to incorporate short- and long-range considerations into plans.
• In conjunction with Risk Management, ensure expansion plan and production cost modeling is current (fuel costs, capacity, costs, etc.).
• Research new techniques in quantitative optimization for resource planning.
• Maintain knowledge of emerging generation tech for future portfolio inclusion.
• Follow developments in federal/state policies affecting resource plan (emissions, renewables).
