Job summary

Virginia Tech is seeking a Director of Research Security and Export Controls to lead university-wide programs ensuring compliance with federal research security, export controls, and sanctions regulations.

The role oversees OESRC operations, develops policy and training, and collaborates with IT, International Affairs, Legal Counsel, HR, Research and Innovation, and Audit, Risk and Compliance to support research objectives.

Qualifications

• US citizenship required with eligibility for at least Secret clearance.
• Deep knowledge of NSPM-33, CHIPS Act, export controls laws, and related regulations.
• Familiarity with NIST 800-series and CMMC program requirements.
• Experience developing policies and training resources.
• Proven ability to interpret complex regulatory language for research security.

Responsibilities

• Lead university-wide research security and export-controls programs and set strategic priorities.
• Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and training aligned to federal regs.
• Direct cross-functional projects from planning through implementation.
• Assess international collaborations for risk and develop TCPs and mitigation plans.
• Oversee OESRC operations, staff development, and performance expectations.
• Collaborate with IT, International Affairs, Legal, HR, Research and Innovation, and Audit Risk.
• Monitor program progress and prepare reports to demonstrate compliance.
