Job summary

East River Electric Power Cooperative in Madison, SD seeks a strategic Chief Financial Officer to lead the Planning and Finance Division, shaping financial strategy, reporting, budgeting, and capital planning to support the cooperative's business plan and member value.

You will collaborate with the CEO/GM, Board, and staff to translate complex financial information into clear guidance, manage risk, and build a high-performing team. A residency within 35 miles of Madison is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or related field.
• At least 10 years in finance and accounting with 5+ years in leadership.
• Strong knowledge of finance, budgeting, cost control, and long-term planning.
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate financial performance, identify risks and opportunities, and develop effective strategies.
• Exceptional leadership, relationship management, communication, influence, and decision-making skills.
• Proficiency with computer technology and spreadsheet analysis.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Provide executive-level financial guidance and inform senior leadership decisions.
• Develop financial strategies, plans, programs, and resources aligned with the strategic plan and help achieve short- and long-term goals.
• Monitor financial performance, analyze results, address variances, and establish meaningful measures.
• Coordinate the annual work plan and budget with the CEO/GM and oversee division activities.
• Prepare proposals for special loads and negotiate agreements with other utilities as appropriate.
• Lead, engage, and develop division employees with clear expectations and coaching.
• Foster a collaborative work environment and ensure high-quality customer support across administrative, financial, rate, and contract services.
• Represent East River through Board presentations, meetings with member systems, and industry/community activities.
