Job summary

The City of Frederick is seeking a Utility Maintenance Technician I to perform manual, physically demanding tasks in maintaining stormwater and wastewater facilities. You will assist in repairs, inspections, and data entry under supervision, and be part of essential personnel ready to respond to emergencies.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED, a valid Vehicle Operator’s license, and Maryland State Flagger Certification or ability to obtain within six months.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read and comprehend operating and maintenance instructions and manuals in English.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence in English.
  • Ability to speak effectively and present information to customers and colleagues.
  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative and routine maintenance and repairs on stormwater and wastewater systems.
  • Assist in operating and maintaining collection system structures and facilities.
  • Enter data into spreadsheets and work order software; maintain records.
  • Read and interpret utility maps and site plans; locate structures and mainlines.
  • Assist with set-up of work zones and traffic controls; perform manual digging and backfilling as needed.
  • Operate light equipment and hand tools to support maintenance activities.
