Job summary

HDR is seeking a Stormwater Team Lead in Austin, TX. You will lead and mentor a team of stormwater professionals, oversee hydrologic and hydraulic studies, and manage projects from planning through delivery.

The role emphasizes technical leadership, client relationship building, and collaboration across HDR's water resources practice to deliver compliant, on-time solutions in a growing regional market.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of stormwater professionals through coaching, career planning, technical guidance, and performance management to support both individual growth and business objectives.
  • Monitor team workload, identify resource needs, and coordinate staffing assignments to balance project demands, employee development, and utilization goals.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and engaging team culture that promotes technical excellence, continuous learning, and strong employee retention.
  • Serve as a Project Manager and technical leader and trusted advisor for stormwater and water resources projects, providing oversight, quality reviews, and guidance on complex engineering challenges.
  • Lead and oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of hydrologic and hydraulic studies projects across a variety of projects including flood risk reduction, storm drainage, floodplain mapping, watershed planning, stream restoration, and stormwater infrastructure improvements.
  • Support project managers and technical leads in delivering projects on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with HDR quality standards.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, industry partners, and internal technical networks to strengthen HDR's stormwater practice and identify opportunities for growth.
  • Promote innovation, knowledge sharing, and the application of emerging tools, technologies, and best practices to improve project delivery and technical capabilities across the team.

In the role of Stormwater Team Lead, we'll count on you to:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of three to five stormwater professionals through coaching, career planning, technical guidance, and performance management to support both individual growth and business objectives

Support recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and retention efforts to help build and sustain a high-performing stormwater team.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience serving as a task lead, project manager, technical lead, or informal mentor
  • Experience coordinating work across multiple staff and projects
  • Experience preparing plans, specifications, cost estimates, technical reports, and permit documentation
  • Experience performing technical reviews and QA/QC
  • Experience supporting staff development, mentoring, or onboarding
  • Experience in the Texas market
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 7 years experience
  • Professional registration, license or certification may be required based on role
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments
  • Good leadership and organizational skills
