Job summary

The City of Alexandria is seeking an Equipment Operator I in the Sewers Department to operate a range of heavy equipment and perform manual tasks supporting stormwater permit activities and BMP maintenance. Responsibilities include trenching with a backhoe, backfilling, grading, and supporting seasonal public works projects.

Work may occur in all weather conditions and require responding to emergencies, including snow events; overtime and on-call shifts may be required as part of rapid-response

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 1 year of experience operating maintenance/construction equipment.
• Valid Commercial Driver’s license required; ability to perform heavy manual labor in all weather.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment such as backhoes, loaders, skid steers, sweepers, dump trucks, snowplows, and rollers.
• Excavate trenches, install and repair pipes, culverts, and storm drains.
• Perform daily inspections and basic maintenance on equipment.
• Set up safe work zones with cones, signs, and traffic control.
• Respond to emergencies including snow events and flooding when needed.
