Job description

Department Overview

Technology & Security delivers secure, resilient, and scalable enterprise platforms that support critical business applications, infrastructure services, cloud operations, automation, and emerging technology enablement.

Position Summary

The Storage Platform Engineer (SPE) builds and supports modern data infrastructure that enables advanced business capabilities across AWS, Azure, and on premise. The SPE manages cloud storage services, including AWS (S3, EBS, EFS, FSx), Azure (Blob Storage, Azure Files, Managed Disks, Data Lake Storage), and Azure Local (Storage Spaces Direct, Azure Managed Disks). The role also supports PG&E enterprise block and file storage platforms used for mission-critical, high-performance, and file-based workloads, including Dell PowerMax, Dell PowerFlex, Dell PowerStore, DellUnity 380F, IBM FlashSystem, IBM SVC, Elastic Cloud Storage, Power Vault Storage, Cisco MDS SAN fabric technologies, and Dell PowerScale/Isilon NAS. The role focuses on designing reliable storage pipelines and storage structures that support analytics, AI, and machine learning workloads. The SPE also integrates AI capabilities into storage platforms to improve automation, optimization, and predictive maintenance.

The role includes developing AI-driven workflows that support storage maintenance and performance tuning. Infrastructure provisioning for storage resources is managed through Terraform, including multi-cloud resource provisioning, lifecycle policies, encryption, replication, and access control as code. Deployment automation is implemented through Azure DevOps pipelines, including storage provisioning, backup validation, and environment promotion from DEV to PROD.

Job Responsibilities

  • Administer, configure, and support enterprise storage platforms across on-premises and cloud environments, including SAN, NAS, object storage, software-defined storage, AWS storage services, Azure storage services, and Azure Local storage capabilities.

  • Support PG&E-approved block/SAN storage platforms and related fabric technologies, including Dell PowerMax, Dell PowerFlex, Dell PowerStore, IBM FlashSystem, IBM SVC, AWS Elastic Block Store, and Cisco MDS SAN switches, ensuring alignment with enterprise storage standards, lifecycle plans, and workload performance requirements.

  • Administer and support PG&E-approved NAS/file storage platforms, including Dell PowerScale/Isilon and related OneFS capabilities such as SyncIQ, SmartConnect, SmartQuotas, SnapshotIQ, SmartPools, NFS exports, SMB/CIFS shares, access zones, replication, and file-system migration activities.

  • Provision, expand, reclaim, and optimize storage resources to support application, database, virtual infrastructure, file services, analytics, and business continuity requirements.

  • Monitor storage health, capacity, utilization, latency, throughput, IOPS, replication status, SAN fabric status, predictive alerts, and service availability using enterprise storage management and AIOps tools such as Cisco NDFC, IBM Storage Insights, Dell InsightIQ, Dell AIOps, and Dell Secure Connect Gateway.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve storage incidents across arrays, fabrics, file systems, cloud storage accounts, managed disks, snapshots, replication services, backup dependencies, and connectivity paths.

  • Partner with application, database, compute, network, cybersecurity, cloud, and vendor teams to analyze requirements, resolve performance issues, support deployments, and improve storage service reliability.

  • Implement storage protection capabilities, including snapshots, replication, cloning, encryption, retention policies, immutable storage, and recovery validation to support disaster recovery and ransomware resilience.

  • Implement and maintain storage security controls across on-premises and cloud platforms, including role-based access control, least-privilege permissions, encryption at rest and in transit, secure key management, network segmentation, private endpoints, and secure storage configuration standards.

  • Partner with cybersecurity, governance, risk, compliance, and audit teams to support vulnerability remediation, access reviews, logging, monitoring, policy enforcement, data classification, retention requirements, and regulatory compliance for storage services.

  • Develop and maintain automation, scripts, infrastructure-as-code modules, and reusable deployment patterns for storage provisioning, monitoring, lifecycle policies, replication, access controls, and environment promotion.
