Overview
We are seeking a Storage Operations Engineer to support the daily operations, maintenance, and reliability of large-scale storage infrastructure serving high-performance computing and research workloads.
This hands-on, operational role joins a storage engineering team managing over 200PB of storage. Responsibilities include monitoring system health, resolving incidents, managing capacity, performing maintenance, and supporting reliable access to data across the environment.
This opportunity is well suited for an early- to mid-career infrastructure professional with practical storage administration experience who wants to develop expertise in HPC and enterprise-scale storage. Prior ownership of a multi-petabyte environment is not required, but candidates should bring a working foundation in storage support and troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities
Storage Operations & Support
- Support daily operations of enterprise file, block, and object storage platforms.
- Monitor storage availability, performance, capacity, and system health.
- Investigate alerts, resolve support tickets, and allocate tickets to senior engineers or vendors.
- Perform routine storage administration, provisioning, access management, and configuration tasks.
- Assist with firmware and software updates, patching, hardware replacements, and scheduled maintenance.
- Follow established change management procedures and maintain accurate operational documentation.
Troubleshooting & Performance Monitoring
- Troubleshoot storage connectivity, availability, capacity, and performance issues.
- Review logs, alerts, and performance metrics to identify problems and support root-cause analysis.
- Work with compute, Linux, and network teams to resolve issues affecting storage access and workload performance.
- Help identify capacity trends, recurring incidents, and opportunities to improve reliability.
- Support researchers and software engineers with storage-related requests and workflow issues.
Automation & Process Improvement
- Use and maintain scripts that simplify routine administration, monitoring, and reporting.
- Assist with repeatable deployment and maintenance workflows using automation and Infrastructure-as-Code practices.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual work and improve operational consistency.
- Develop technical skills through collaboration with experienced storage engineers.
- Partner with storage engineers, infrastructure teams, researchers, and software engineers.
- Coordinate vendor support cases, collect diagnostic information, and track issues through resolution.
- Work with technologies and vendors including Dell, VAST Data, HPE, and Rubrik.
- Document troubleshooting steps, maintenance procedures, and lessons learned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
- Prior hands-on experience administering or supporting enterprise storage in a production environment.
- Working knowledge of file, block, and object storage concepts.
- Experience with an enterprise storage platform such as Dell Isilon/PowerScale, VAST Data, NetApp, HPE, or a comparable system.
- Familiarity with Linux administration and command-line troubleshooting.
- Understanding of storage provisioning, capacity monitoring, system health, and incident resolution.
- Basic understanding of networking concepts related to storage connectivity.
- Experience using ticketing systems such as JIRA or ServiceNow.
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills.
- Ability to follow operational procedures, manage support priorities, and collaborate across technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Exposure to HPC, research computing, clustered filesystems, or scale-out storage.
- Familiarity with NFS, SMB, or other storage access protocols.
- Basic Python, Bash, or PowerShell scripting experience.
- Exposure to infrastructure automation, configuration management, or Infrastructure as Code.
- Experience assisting with storage upgrades, migrations, hardware maintenance, or vendor support cases.
- Familiarity with backup, recovery, and data protection practices.
Ideal Background
Candidates may come from roles such as Storage Administrator, Storage Support Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, Systems Administrator, or Data Center Engineer with storage responsibilities.
The emphasis is on a solid storage foundation, dependable operational execution, troubleshooting ability, and a willingness to learn within a large-scale HPC environment.
