Job Description
General Summary
Under general supervision, perform team leader responsibilities in processes to decontaminate, prepare, sterilize, store and issue medical/surgical instruments, supplies and equipment in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
- Assists Manager or Supervisor in determining work priorities, assuring that all tasks are accomplished in a timely manor by monitoring and directing the daily work activities of Central Sterile processing personnel.
- Monitors department protocols as part of the department quality assurance program by auditing daily work processes and procedures, and assures appropriate corrections are made where/and when necessary.
- Observes daily practices and identifies, corrects and provides appropriate training or retraining.
- Assigns work and priorities to sterile processing personnel in order to maintain efficient workflow.
- Assists with orientation and training of new sterile processing personnel, or scrub tech personnel or students, and other personnel as directed.
- Assists Manager/Supervisor with inventory maintenance to meet customer and department demands.
- Conducts the inventory of disposable supplies, cleaning solutions, replacement instruments and minor equipment.
- Establishes and maintains courteous and effective relationships with all customers such as patients, visitors, co-workers, nurses, physicians and other members of the health care team.
- Assists Central Sterile Processing personnel with their activities when required to assure all tasks and responsibilities are accomplished on time and in accordance with departmental policy.
- Modifies work practices, as directed by the supervisor, in response to industry trends and changes in sterile processing methods and standards.
- Observes and enforces appropriate handling and safety standards throughout the entire sterilization process in accordance with governing regulations and UMMS standards.
- Coordinates and assists with endoscope management throughout UMMS.
- Attends relevant hospital and community, and in-service training programs, including CPR and safety training to promote professional growth and development..
- Maintain certification through IAHCSMM by completing 12 credit hours of continual education per year.
- Performs related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience as Surgical Technician or Sterile Processing Technician. Surgical Technician must have 2-years of general OR experience. Sterile Processing Technician must be certified through IAHCSMM and have 2 years CSP related experience.
- Knowledge of the use of a PC and computerized database system or demonstrated ability to learn within one year.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to work with various clinical personnel, resolve problems and to properly identify and label supplies for inventory purposes.
