Job summary

Logan Health Whitefish in Whitefish, Montana, seeks a Sterile Processing Technician to join our surgical support team. You will decontaminate, sterilize, inspect, and assemble instruments, ensuring safe patient care and efficient case flow.

Candidates with a year of sterile processing or healthcare experience and a preferred certification will be supported in obtaining CBSPD/IAHCSMM within two years. This on‑site role offers day shifts and PRN options at a leading Montana health system.

Sterile Processing Technicians are the guardians of patient safety — ensuring surgical instruments, equipment, and environments are clean, sterile, organized, and ready when they matter most. As a Sterile Processing Technician, you will play a critical role in supporting our surgical and procedural teams through the decontamination, sterilization, inspection, assembly, and distribution of surgical instruments and trays. Schedule: Day Shift – Variable Hours | PRN status

What You’ll Do:

• Protect Patient Safety
• Decontaminate, disinfect, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment according to strict department and regulatory standards.
• Perform quality assurance checks to ensure instruments are safe, functional, and surgery‑ready.
• Assemble & Prepare Assemble surgical trays and instrument sets with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Wrap, label, and prepare trays and equipment for sterilization and transport.
• Keep Operations Moving Maintain organized inventory of instruments, implants, and supplies.
• Communicate shortages, equipment concerns, or damaged instruments to the appropriate teams.
• Support a High‑Performing Surgical Team Work closely with surgical staff and healthcare teams to ensure instruments and supplies are available when needed.
• Help maintain efficient workflow in a fast‑paced healthcare environment.

What to Expect Physically:

• Sterile Processing is a hands‑on, physically active role.
• Team members regularly: Push and pull large instrument carts and supply bins
• Lift trays, equipment, and supplies
• Stand and move throughout the shift

Qualifications:

• Experience previous sterile processing or healthcare experience is preferred, but not required.

• Certification (preferred) candidates will be expected to obtain at least one of the following certifications within two years of hire: International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM/HSPA) Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

• Attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Comfortable using Microsoft Office Suite and learning additional software as needed.

Job Specific Duties:

• Provides excellent customer service and exhibits professional demeanor at all times.
• Manually sorts, disassembles, cleans and/or disinfects instruments, scopes and supplies per department protocol for assigned area(s).
• Utilizes critical thinking skills in regards to workflow and assignment.
• Performs quality control on instruments/scopes by checking for visual damage, sharpness, cleanliness, and working condition.
• Initiates process for repairs and/or replaces as applicable to assigned area(s).
• Completes all daily production and quality control records.
• Recommends ordering of new instruments as needed.
• Stocks surgical case cart area, processing, decontamination, and code blue cart shelving.
• Stocks and maintains code blue carts for immediate need and usage.
• Continually checks for any outdates of sterile items and packaging integrity.
• Performs immediate‑use steam sterilization of instrumentation using proper technique.
• Prepares surgical instrument sets and/or trays.
• Prioritizes production of surgical case cart, floor stock trays and miscellaneous.
• Wraps, packages, and sets up instrument trays per department protocol.
• Labels all instrument sets, peel‑pouches, etc.
• Efficiently and accurately loads sterilizers per department procedure and as applicable to assigned area(s).
• Sterilizes instruments, scopes, supplies and linen using mandated sterilization processes per department protocol.
• Ensures proper operation of sterilization units through daily quality control testing.
• Inspects equipment as applicable to assigned area(s) for visible signs of malfunction and reports malfunction to leader in a timely manner.
• Processes requisitions and requests for case carts, instrumentation and supplies in a timely manner.
• Communicates deficits in supplies or instruments for case carts to appropriate stakeholders per department protocol.

Logan Health operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed. PRN positions (also referred to as Casual, As Needed, or Per Diem) at Logan Health offer flexibility and are designed to provide coverage during busy periods, employee absences, and vacations, making them an excellent opportunity to support the team as needed. PRN employees can participate in a matching 401(k) plan and have access to the Employee Assistance Program. Additionally, they may qualify for hourly differential pay for certain shifts or hours, offering extra compensation based on department‑specific scheduling needs. Pay rates and scheduling practices may vary by department.
