Location: Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, PA

Schedule: Full time (40 hours per week), evening shifts from 3pm-11:30pm, weekend rotations (approximately once every 6 weekends, depending on staffing), weekend call (primarily voluntary but may be assigned on a rotating basis if no volunteers), occasional support in other SPD areas (Endo, Women & Babies).

Summary:

  1. The Sterile Processing Technician performs duties necessary for the decontamination, cleaning, inspection, quality assurance monitoring, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, distribution, and documentation of surgical instrumentation and equipment according to established procedures of AAMI ANSI, IAHCSMM CDC, OSHA, AORN, and AST. These duties are performed for Perioperative Services and various departments across Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health.
  2. Qualified individuals must have the ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to perform the following duties:
  3. Clean, decontaminate, assemble, and sterilize all instrumentation and equipment, adhering to departmental policies, infection control standards, and regulations. Operate sterilization and decontamination equipment safely and efficiently. Inspect, assemble, and sterilize surgical instrumentation and equipment from other entities as per policies.
  4. Monitor and report all biological indicators and other quality assurance verifications to ensure patient safety.
  5. Restock case carts with supplies, instrumentation, and equipment based on the surgical schedule. Ensure all products are unexpired and correctly stocked for Perioperative Services, specialty, and emergency carts.
  6. Stage and deliver case carts, stocking carts, and equipment to designated Perioperative locations.
  7. Maintain inventory levels of instrumentation, equipment, and sterile supplies. Report missing, damaged, or malfunctioning items and equipment.
  8. Serve as the initial contact for departmental inquiries, responding courteously and professionally via phone or in person.
  9. Keep work areas clean and organized, preparing them for the next shift.
  10. Participate in cross-training for new surgical instrumentation and equipment.
  11. Support other SPD sites as requested.
  12. Promote effective collaboration with the Perioperative team and other stakeholders.
  13. Participate in department quality improvement initiatives.
  14. Secondary duties include repairing loaner equipment, reporting malfunctions, demonstrating computer applications, following tracking and preference card procedures, attending in-services, participating in on-call duties, and other assigned tasks.

Responsibilities:

  1. Minimum Qualifications:
  2. High School diploma or GED required.
  3. Basic computer skills.
  4. If hired after 12/28/2020, must obtain certification from CRCST or CSPDT within 18 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in healthcare, procedural or surgical services.
  2. Surgical Technologist (ST) or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred.
  3. One year of surgical instrument processing, reprocessing, or medical inventory experience.
  4. One year of Sterile Processing experience.
  5. One year of patient care equipment experience.

Credentials:

  1. Certified Registered Central Service Technician
  2. Certified Surgical Technologist

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  1. H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
