Job Title & Specialty Area: Orthopedic Technician

Department: An affiliation with the Andrew's Institute

Location: Fairview Specialty Clinic

Shift: Full time; 40 hours per week

Additional Information: Shifts to be scheduled within the operating hours of Monday- Friday between the hours of 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM. On call requirements for evenings and weekends on average one week per month. Children's Health Specialty Center Fairview is an affiliation with Children's Health Medical Center Plano's Andrew's Institute. Andrew's Insititute will operate a pediatric orthopedic and sports medicine clinic within the specialty center. The specialty center is scheduled to open October 2025 and will offer an inclusive range of orthopedic out-patient care with a focus on fracture care, sports medicine and concussion care.

Summary:
The purpose of this job is to apply and remove all types of casts and splints. Typically a person in this position will have at least two (2) years of experience in the care of the orthopedic patient. It is preferred that they are certified by the National Board of Certification for Orthopedic Technologists (NBOCT). This person works independently without supervision and may be required to provide call coverage.

Responsibilities:

  • Articulates descriptions of orthopedic conditions to patients and their families based on the understanding of anatomical structures and their relationships with one another.
  • Applies, adjusts and removes all common orthopedic devices, using a manual or standard practice as a guideline.
  • Performs basic casting, including the application of SPICA casts.
  • Knowledge of theory and application of skin or skeletal traction.
  • Properly applies aseptic techniques in dressing changes, removes sutures or staples and sets up a sterile surgical field.
  • Interprets simple fractures and dislocations on X-ray films.
  • Must perform in an operating room environment as a first and second assistant or scrub technician under the direct supervision of a surgeon.
  • Must be able communicate effectively with providers, clinic staff, patients and families.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • At least 2 years full-time work experience in a hospital, clinic, office or as an independent contractor working directly in the care of orthopedic patients preferred
EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association required upon hire
  • National Board of Certification of Orthopedic Technologists (NBCOT) - within 2 years of date of hire
