Job summary

Job description

At ELM Management Services, the Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) is responsible for cleaning, sterilizing, assembling, and distributing medical instruments and surgical equipment used in the ASC. The SPT works under the supervision of the ASC Charge Nurse and functions as a cohesive member of the surgical team.

Essential Functions
  • Collection and decontamination of instruments and disposal of biohazardous materials from procedure areas
  • Utilization of both hand washing and the use of an ultrasonic washer techniques will be required to complete the washing, soaking, rinsing, and drying of instruments
  • Assembling and packaging surgical trays and instruments per company guidelines
  • Inspection, repair, and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment by following IFUs
  • Sterilization of trays and instruments per company guidelines by use of autoclave methods
  • Labeling and tracking instruments, trays, and equipment
  • Ensuring compliance with all company, OSHA, AAAHC, FDA, CDC, CMS, and The Joint Commission standards
  • Meticulous record keeping for all washing and sterilization cycles
  • Organization and maintenance of Sterilized supplies, trays, and instruments
  • Inventory management of surgical stock, decontamination, and sterile processing items
  • Maintains Infection Prevention standards by controlling temperature and humidity
  • Assist the surgical team in the preparation for and cleaning after procedures
  • Assist the surgical team with surgical procedures while maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Coordinating scheduled and preventative maintenance
  • Scrubbing into cases to anticipate the needs and providing instruments to providers during procedures
  • Coordination with surgical vendors and reps to acquire and return instruments, trays, and equipment
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, and supplies required to perform specific responsibilities within skill set and ASC setting
  • Knowledge of Sterile and Aseptic techniques
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull equipment and assist with patient positioning as required
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced surgical environment while maintaining accuracy, safety, and professionalism
  • Ability to understand and comply with HIPAA rules and regulations and patient Rights and Responsibilities
  • Ability to follow established universal precautions in the use of PPE and other safety equipment
  • Ability to use discretion and work independently under general supervision
  • Ability to understand and adhere to the Professional Code of Conduct and demonstrate professional accountability
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Current CPR certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Sterile Processing experience required
  • Completion of an accredited Sterile Processing or Surgical Technologist program required. Will consider extensive experience in an Ambulatory Surgical Center if applicant does not have certification
  • Orthopedic or Neurology experience preferred
  • Prior Surgical Technologist preferred
  • BLS/CPR certification required
  • Must meet pre‑employment requirements and maintain all applicable state and job-related guidelines for background screening. Depending on state-specific requirements, this may include drug testing, health screening, CPR/Basic First Aid, and license/credential verifications
