Job summary

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to support the surgical services team. You will decontaminate, prepare, sterilize, and distribute trays and equipment under supervision, and help maintain an organized, clean work area.

You’ll contribute to cross-contamination prevention, complete advanced internal training in a surgical specialty, and serve as a department resource for designated services. An HS diploma and related program are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with surgical tech or sterile processing training.
• Certification preferred in sterile processing field.
• Two years of SPD or surgical technologist experience or related schooling.

Responsibilities

• Performs SPD functions: decontamination, prep/assembly, sterilization, distribution.
• Maintains cleanliness and prevents cross-contamination per policies.
• Acts as a department resource and preceptor for new staff.
• Provides in-services on instruments and trays for assigned service.
• Supports OR team and back-up for supervisor as needed.

Job Description

Performs a variety of duties in relationship to decontamination, preparation/assembly, sterilization, and distribution of trays/sets, equipment, and supplies with direct supervision. Performs routine cleaning such as wiping down tables. Participate in distribution of operating room supplies and trays/sets. Performs all tasks assigned in a neat and organized manner. Maintains and prevents cross contamination by observing dress codes, environmental policies, and traffic control. Completes advanced internal training in a surgical specialty and serves as a department resource for the assigned specialty(ies).

Experience

• Certification from Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
• 2 years of Sterile Processing or Surgical Technologist experience inclusive of relevant school curriculum

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) or Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) certification

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent and graduate from a surgical technology or sterile processing technician program or three years of experience in a clinical environment

Certification Summary

• Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) from Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
• Certification(s) must stay current to maintain employment in this role

Job Responsibilities

• Completes all job functions of a SPD Technician.
• Serves as a resource to other team members on the processing and assembly of trays for designated specialty(ies).
• Serves as back up for supervisor/team lead in their absence as requested.
• Provides a minimum of 2 staff in-services on the instruments and trays for assigned service. In-services should include surgical technician staff members.
• Serves as a preceptor for the department for new staff members.
• Assist with orientation and annual competency check offs.
• Serves as a resource to the OR team for the assigned service.
