Atrium Health is hiring a Sterile Processing Technician at 37719 Carolinas Medical Center: Mercy. The SPD handles orthopedic and spine instrumentation in a fast-paced setting, ensuring instruments are decontaminated, assembled, sterilized, and ready for daily surgeries.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, two years in sterile processing, CSPDT or equivalent certification, and Surgical Instrument Specialist certification within one year.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates repair of instruments and maintains an off-site log.
  • Maintains instrument sets by aligning with the surgical schedule.
  • Procures and returns loaner, vendor, and trial instrument sets.
  • Orders new/replacement supplies and instruments within budget guidance.
  • Assists with recalls to promote patient care.
  • Maintains instrument tracking system and count sheets.
  • Collaborates with SPD Liaisons to ensure complete sets.
  • Communicates instrument availability with SPD staff and OR Coordinators.
  • Provides guidance on sterile processing and assists with special projects.
  • Supports Sterile Processing staffing as needed.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and order instruments via PeopleSoft.

5am-1:30pm M-F with possible weekend and holiday call requirements and shift adjustment as needed for staffing.

Pay Range

$22.90 - $34.35

Supporting an average of 60-65 surgical cases daily, our SPD team specializes in orthopedic and spine instrumentation and thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. We're looking for dependable, motivated individuals who are eager to learn, take ownership of their work, and help ensure our surgeons have the instruments they need when they need them.

Education/ Experience
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two years' experience in Sterile Processing required.
  • Certification as a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or other sterile processing certification required.
  • Certification as a Surgical Instrument Specialist required within one year of hire.
Essential Functions
  • Coordinates the repair of instruments with appropriate vendor and maintains a log for tracking items set off-site.
  • Coordinates the maintenance of instrument sets by assessing surgical case schedule and deducing which instruments can be removed from circulation.
  • Coordinates the procurement of and return of loaner, vendor, and/or trial instrument sets.
  • Orders new and replacement supplies and instruments based on inventory, par levels, iShare requests, and at the direction of the Manager of Sterile Processing while striving to adhere to departmental budgets.
  • Assists with resolving product and/or instrument recalls as quickly as possible to promote patient care.
  • Maintains the department's instrument tracking system by entering new instruments into system and building count sheets.
  • Collaborates with SPD Liaisons to ensure sets are available and complete.
  • Uses excellent communication skills when discussing instrument availability with SPD Supervisors, SPD Liaisons, and/or OR Clinical Coordinators.
  • Expert in all aspects of the sterile processing cycle and ability to provide guidance and education to SPD.
  • Assists with special projects and interdepartmental committees as needed.
  • Assists with Sterile Processing staffing as needed.
  • Proficient communication skills Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel Ability to order instruments via PeopleSoft.

Ensures surgical instruments and equipment are decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, stored, distributed, and tracked based on quality and infection prevention standards. Teammates should be well versed in Sterile Processing Department (SPD) fundamentals, demonstrate initiative and the ability to work independently, and possess strong troubleshooting, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Effective communication with peers, Operating Room staff, and the on-call leader is essential. Candidates should have knowledge of ORC processes, Da Vinci instrumentation, vendor trays, daily equipment testing, and department documentation and record-keeping practices.
