Job description

The Pharmacy Technician - Sterile supports the safe and accurate preparation of sterile and non-sterile compounded medications under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This role performs compounding, labeling, packaging, documentation, quality control, inventory support, and cleanroom maintenance in compliance with OptioRx policies, applicable laws, and USP <795>, <797>, and <800> standards. The position requires strong attention to detail, adherence to aseptic technique, and consistent follow-through on established safety, sanitation, and quality procedures. The Pharmacy Technician - Sterile collaborates with pharmacists, managers, and team members to support efficient workflow, medication accuracy, and high-quality patient care in a regulated pharmacy environment.

• Prepare sterile and non-sterile compounded medications, including capsules, troches, creams, solutions, and batch orders, in accordance with approved formulas, pharmacist direction, USP <795>, <797>, and <800> requirements, and applicable compounding regulations.
• Read and interpret medication orders and formulation worksheets to support accurate preparation, labeling, packaging, and dispensing of compounded medications.
• Perform sterile compounding activities using appropriate aseptic technique, proper hand hygiene, garbing, and gowning practices, and required cleanroom procedures in ISO 5 and hazardous compounding environments.
• Perform pharmaceutical calculations, measure and prepare ingredients accurately, and complete quality assurance and quality control checks to ensure medication accuracy and patient safety.
• Prepare, package, store, and handle medications requiring special handling, including hazardous preparations, in accordance with safety protocols, personal protective equipment requirements, and applicable procedures.
• Maintain required compounding records, documentation, labels, logs, and other traceability information to support regulatory compliance and product accountability.
• Maintain cleanroom, compounding lab, equipment, and work areas in accordance with established cleaning, sanitation, safety, and environmental monitoring requirements.
• Support medication filling, processing, dispensing, and shipment preparation while prioritizing requests and contributing to efficient workflow.
• Assist with inventory control by monitoring, organizing, restocking, and properly storing medications, raw ingredients, supplies, and personal protective equipment.
• Follow OptioRx policies and procedures, applicable safety and quality assurance practices, HIPAA and patient confidentiality standards, and state and federal laws governing pharmacy operations.
• Complete and maintain all required initial, periodic, and validation training, competency assessments, and pre-assessments to remain authorized to perform assigned sterile and non-sterile compounding activities.
• Report product incidents, quality concerns, safety issues, or workflow barriers in accordance with pharmacy policy and escalation procedures.
• Represent the pharmacy professionally and courteously in interactions with patients, team members, managers, pharmacists, and other internal or external stakeholders.
• Participate in surveys, inspections, audits, and performance improvement activities as requested.
• Support cross-training, workstation coverage, and team workflow needs as directed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Must maintain an active state-specific Pharmacy Technician license in good standing.
• Prior experience in a sterile compounding facility preferred.
• Working knowledge of sterile and non-sterile compounding practices, USP <795>, <797>, and <800> standards, pharmacy legal requirements, prescription information, pharmaceutical calculations, drug handling, storage, packaging, and labeling practices.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, internet applications, pharmacy management systems, and compounding software such as PCCA or comparable systems.
• Ability to continuously sit or stand for extended periods of time, occasionally bend or squat, and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
• Ability to work fully gowned in an ISO 5 environment and pharmacy compounding lab for extended periods of time.
