Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) seeks a State Work Zone Engineer to provide statewide expertise in work zone traffic control, multimodal design, and traffic analysis. Job description

WSDOT seeks a State Work Zone Engineer to provide statewide subject matter expertise in work zone traffic control, multimodal transportation design, and traffic analysis. The engineer will work collaboratively with regional staff, specialists, consultants, and local agencies to provide technical leadership, ensure sound engineering practices, and support traffic design activities across regions and projects. The role combines office and field work with limited exposure to work zone hazards and requires regular statewide travel.

Key qualifications
  • Demonstrated expertise in work zone traffic control, transportation management plans, and advanced transportation engineering principles
  • Ability to exercise independent engineering judgment, evaluate complex analyses, and develop sound engineering guidance and recommendations
  • Ability to develop, evaluate, interpret, and implement engineering policies, standards, and technical guidance for traffic control practices
  • Ability to develop and deliver technical training materials on temporary traffic control and agency requirements
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate state-owned vehicles; Washington State license within six months of hire
  • Preferred: Licensed Professional Engineer (Civil) in Washington State
