MISSION STATEMENT

Dedicated to providing the highest degree of law enforcement service throughout the State of New Hampshire while maintaining the traditions of fairness, professionalism, and integrity.

The New Hampshire Department of Safety, Division of State Police, will be administering the written examination on February 26 and February 27, 2005. The application deadline for these test dates is January 21, 2005. The March 5 and March 6, 2005 test dates have been rescinded.

Application Deadlines: Applications received up to 2 weeks prior to each of these test dates will be considered for scheduling.

Candidates who score a minimum of 70% on the written examination will be invited to participate in the physical agility test scheduled for the same afternoon as the written examination.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Age / Citizenship: Must be at least 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen.

Minimum Education / Experience:

• a) High school diploma or GED, PLUS two years full-time employment as a certified police officer, OR
• b) High school diploma or GED, PLUS 60 credit hours from a recognized college, preferably with a major in Criminal Justice, OR
• c) High school diploma or GED, PLUS two years full-time active duty military service with an honorable discharge.

Applicants MUST submit appropriate documentation (transcripts, proof of police certification, and/or DD Form 214) with their applications to continue in the recruitment process.

Character: A history of criminal or unethical behavior will cause an applicant to be ineligible for further consideration. Please read Information on Automatic Disqualifiers.

Eyesight / Hearing: Must be at least 20/40 in each eye uncorrected and corrected to 20/20 in each eye with normal color perception. Prior to admittance to the written examination, candidates must submit documentation from an optometrist or physician certifying the candidates eligibility. Hearing must be sufficient to perform essential job functions.

Physical Fitness: Candidates must have the ability to perform physically demanding tasks encountered in job performance and must pass a physical agility test.

Residence: Candidates must be willing to accept employment anywhere in the State of New Hampshire and obtain a NH driver license.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Written Examination: Candidates whose applications show they possess the minimum qualifications will be notified by mail of their assigned date and time to take the written examination. This multiple choice test takes approximately three hours and primarily measures reading comprehension and critical thinking.

Physical Agility Test: Candidates who pass the written examination will be invited to participate in physical agility testing, that same day, to determine if they possess the strength and stamina to perform the physically demanding tasks encountered in law enforcement duty. Candidates must have a physician, physician´s assistant, or nurse practitioner complete a standardized medical examination form provided by the State Police. This test consists of a series of four activities: a single bench press, push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1-1/2 mile run. The standards for successful completion of these activities have been established by the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research. The minimum standards for each of the four activities are as follows:

Physical fitness abilities of applicants accepted as probationary troopers will be tested again prior to entry into the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Academy.

Structured Panel Interview: A structured panel interview will be scheduled for candidates who pass the physical agility test. Following the interview certain candidates will be selected for background investigations. Prospective appointees undergo polygraph, psychological, and medical examinations at state expense.

All candidates will be subject to unannounced drug testing at any point during the selection process.

SALARY / BENEFITS

The starting salary for this position is $34,394. After a successful probationary period of one year, Probationary Troopers are promoted to the rank of State Police Trooper I with a salary range of $37,313 to $50,068.

Probationary Troopers accumulate annual leave at the rate of one (1) day per month, and this leave can be used upon accrual. Sick leave is accumulated at the rate of one and one-quarter (1 1/4) days per month and can also be used upon accrual. Troopers continue to accrue annual and sick leave in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Probationary troopers are also entitled to 12 annual holidays.

Troopers and their families receive excellent dental and health benefits with premiums fully paid by the State of New Hampshire.

All full-time troopers are enrolled into the NH Retirement System as a condition of employment. Contributions are made by the trooper and the State of New Hampshire.

Full benefits are available after 20 years service and a minimum age of 45.

Life insurance begins after six months of employment. Both the trooper and the State of New Hampshire contribute towards coverage.

Full-time troopers are eligible for tuition assistance at any of the state´s community technical colleges.
