Job summary

The Pew Charitable Trusts is seeking a Manager of State Policy for the Substance Use Prevention and Treatment Initiative (SUPTI) to lead state staff and coordinate with multiple Pew departments from its Washington, D.C. office.

The role requires guiding policy research, advocacy activities, and delivering state-facing deliverables in a hybrid work setting. Ideal candidates bring eight+ years of project management experience, strong policy analysis, and exceptional communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent required; advanced degree preferred.
• Minimum eight years of applicable professional experience, including full life cycle project management.
• Experience with organizations that publish reports and/or research is highly preferred.
• Prior experience directly supervising staff, including performance management and coaching.
• Demonstrated strategic thinking, attention to detail, sound judgment, and ability to move complex projects forward.
• Strong verbal, presentation, facilitation, and written communication skills with diverse audiences.
• Experience convening policy makers, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers and other constituencies.
• Travel: regular domestic travel up to 50%.

Responsibilities

• Foster a work environment that inspires excellence, values impact, and promotes diversity and collaboration.
• Manage and supervise staff leading efforts to advance state legislative and regulatory changes and ensure timely deliverables.
• Oversee life cycle of assigned state engagements and communicate successes to leadership and funders.
• Monitor trends in national and state policy landscapes and adapt strategies accordingly.
• Coach staff in developing state advocacy skills and policy analysis capabilities.
• Support state work operations including budgets, contracts, and sub-grants.
• Coordinate with government relations and legal teams to ensure lobbying compliance guidance.
• Collaborate with experts to incorporate research into state technical assistance.
• Contribute to strategic direction and development of research, advocacy, and communications products.
• Represent SUPTI at external meetings to position the project as a thought leader.
• Assist with special assignments and Pew-wide initiatives as requested.
• Contribute to the behavioral health portfolio within Pew.
