Job summary

North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's Energy, Mineral, and Land Resources division is seeking an Engineer III (NS) to manage the statewide mining regulatory program and oversee permitting, inspection, enforcement, and education activities.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering and four years of progressive experience, with a PE license or within nine months of start. A valid driver's license is also required, and the position offers hybrid telework options.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Professional Engineer’s (PE) License or obtain a valid PE License within nine (9) months of the start date; obtaining and maintaining a valid PE license is a continuing condition of employment.
  • Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Directs the technical and administrative activities of the State Mining Program.
  • Issues permits and recommendations for denial, appropriate compliance/enforcement actions.
  • Project development/implementation, and staff training.
  • Provides expert guidance in mining-related issues to division employees, other agencies and the general public.
  • Serves as staff member to the Mining Commission.
