Job summary

The North Dakota Department of Transportation is seeking skilled Mechanics I–III for the Valley City district to repair and service fleet vehicles and DOT equipment. You will diagnose, repair, and install components across trucks and equipment, ensuring readiness for use in state operations.

Positions require applicable licenses and credentials, with after-hours readiness for emergencies; the role supports Team ND and offers a strong state benefits package.

Qualifications

• Class B driver's license required.
• Two-year curriculum in automotive or diesel/industrial equipment technology completed.
• Two years of related work experience.
• Mechanic II requires Class A permit by first day.
• Completion of a three-year master technology program can substitute for the two-year curriculum and two years of experience.
• Must be able to obtain Class A license with air brakes within 12 months.

Responsibilities

• Repair vehicles and equipment to keep them ready for use.
• Diagnose and repair fleet trucks and DOT equipment.
• Install radios, safety lighting, light bars, sirens and related components.
• Troubleshoot and repair systems including brakes, engines, and electronics.
• Operate heavy equipment and assist with snow removal when needed.
• Maintain shop tools and recordkeeping.
