Fort Wayne Philharmonic is seeking a dedicated Stage Assistant to work closely with the Stage Manager and Director of Operations. The role supports all live performances, load-in/out operations, and backstage safety, with long hours during peak season.

The candidate should be able to lift 50 lbs, drive a large vehicle, possess a valid license, and be available days, nights, weekends, and some holidays. Strong communication and teamwork are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with FW Philharmonic small ensemble performances throughout the season.
  • Aid in load-in and load-out for rehearsals, performances, or auditions.
  • Maintain inventory log with Stage Manager.
  • Support Director of Operations with Guest Artist needs (transportation, tuning, hospitality).
  • Ensure safety measures for rehearsals and performances (risers, rails, steps, shields).
  • Manage backstage appearance and equipment adjustments during events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Stage Manager, Director of Operations and General Manager.

Job description

The Stage Assistant is to work closely with the Stage Manager and Director of Operations in order to ensure the success of the main concert season and the implementation of all orchestra activities. Working closely with IATSE, Guest Artists, various guest conductors, and professional musicians, the Stage Assistant must have a strong sense of understanding of the world of live performing and have some experience with a symphony orchestra. It is common to have 12-hour days and between 42- 45-hour work weeks during the height of the season. The successful candidate will have a personal commitment to symphonic music, demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. They will have a strong attention to detail, proven leadership skills, and the ability to work independently. They will be able to demonstrate a willingness to be a team player in a highly collaborative environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with all FW Philharmonic small ensemble performances throughout the season
  • Assist and aid in the facilitation of all load-in and load-out for any Philharmonic rehearsal, performance, audition, etc . . .
  • Assist Stage Manager in maintaining inventory log
  • Assist Director of Operations with Guest Artist needs, such as transportation, overseeing instrument tuning and practice times, and aiding in hospitality needs
  • Ensure the appropriate safety measures are in place before the start of rehearsals or performances, including risers, safety rails, handrails, steps, and sound shields as appropriate to venue
  • Responsible for all aspects of concert stage appearance and equipment adjustments during rehearsals and performances
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Stage Manager, Director of Operations and General Manager
Requirements:
  • Must be able to safely lift 50 lbs at minimum
  • Must be able to drive a large sprinter van and be willing to learn to drive a 26’ box truck
  • Valid driver's license
  • Availability during the day and nights with weekends and some holidays
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to adhere to strict concert timelines and ensure a safe backstage environment
  • Must be able to stand in one place for extended periods
  • Able to walk up and down stairs many times over a course of hours
  • Noise levels in the work environment are moderate but can reach loud decibels during live performances and events
