Position Purpose
The Staff Systems Engineer is responsible for leading a team of engineers designing, building, and supporting The Home Depot's technical infrastructure of hardware and system software that drives the success of Home Depot and our customers. As a Staff Systems Engineer, you will be part of a dynamic team with engineers of all experience levels who help each other build and grow technical and leadership skills while creating, deploying, and supporting production infrastructure. Staff Systems Engineers contribute to foundational infrastructure as code elements that can be reused as well as architectural diagrams and other related documentation. They participate in the selection and lead the implementation of physical and virtual infrastructure to meet evolving enterprise and product team needs. You are expected to build and grow the skillsets of more junior Engineers on the team.
- Experience in z/OS ISPF, JCL, JES2, etc.
- Experience in z/OS DB2 administration, working with DDL, DML, DCL, DB2 commands, and SQL.
- Experience in the DB2 Utilities (i.e., COPY, QUIESCE, REPAIR, REORG, LOAD, etc.)
- Understand RACF Security
- Monitor instances for events and resolutions/escalations.
- Perform triage and troubleshooting database issues in timely manner.
- Experience in DB2 SQL and Q Replication.
- Develop scripting to automate DB2 administration tasks.
- Find opportunities to improve availability, reliability, and performance of DB2 databases.
- Proficient in Incident, Problem, and Change Management
- REXX development language knowledge to simplify/automate database administration activities.
- Broadcom Detector and Subsystem Analyzer experience.
- DB2 for z/OS v12+ experience.
- DB2 expertise for performance tuning.
- Experience managing large tablespaces.
- Endevor experience.
- On-call rotation.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading configuration, debugging, and support for IT solutions; supporting technology rollouts; setting up system software, hardware, and equipment; creating and optimizing specifications; managing purchase requests; developing test suites for infrastructure deployment.
- Staying updated on industry trends; participating in learning activities; researching new technologies and best practices.
- Researching and analyzing business trends; evaluating and recommending strategic technologies; designing infrastructure, network, database, cloud, AI, and security architectures; maintaining infrastructure as code; participating in project planning; developing training courses.
- Collaborating with teams to understand needs; supporting architecture reviews; monitoring operational status; optimizing performance; supporting security and incidents; maintaining systems; acting as vendor liaison; mentoring junior engineers; developing AI models and analytic tools.
Additional Details
- This position reports to a Systems Engineer Manager or Sr Manager.
- No travel required.
- Most work is in a comfortable indoor environment; occasional light lifting may be needed.
- Minimum qualifications include being 18+, legally permitted to work in the US, with at least 3 years of relevant experience and a related bachelor’s degree.
- Preferred qualifications include extensive experience with IT disciplines, cloud platforms, security, disaster recovery, scripting, and supporting retail operations.
