Job summary

Impulse Space in San Francisco is seeking a Staff Systems Electrical Engineer to own the electrical architecture across our products, including power stages, battery integration, control electronics, and cross-functional interfaces to firmware, thermal, and mechanical teams.

You will drive platform reuse decisions, guide architecture tradeoffs, and ensure certifications, reliability, and safety standards are met while building in-house capabilities and tooling with growing AI assistance.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of electronics design experience in volume-manufactured products.
• Ownership of EVT/DVT/PVT gates, build support, and production test yield at ramp.
• Experience with BOM cost targets and second-sourcing.
• Depth in analog and mixed-signal sensor interfaces and signal conditioning.
• Ability to review firmware and determine if issues are electrical, firmware, thermal, or mechanical.
• Comfort using AI tools and scripting for design review and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Define and partition electrical architecture across boards, processors, and software.
• Define and maintain hardware-to-firmware and board-to-board interfaces.
• Decide what to reuse from the shared platform and what to build in-house.
• Lead cross-domain problem solving across electrical, thermal, and mechanical domains.
• Lead electrical design reviews and set design-standards.
• Assess build-vs-buy and manage the corresponding review processes.
• Own DFMEA, derating, and component qualification; investigate field issues.
• Collaborate with JDM/CM partners and plan travel (4–6 trips/year).
• Own EMC and product safety certification paths.
• Develop tools for characterization, analysis pipelines, and review support.
