Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Phoenix seeks a Staff Substation Engineer to develop design deliverables for high‑voltage substations (13kV–765kV) under a licensed PE. You will collaborate with the project team through design and construction, adjusting plans to meet budget, design factors, or client needs.

Responsibilities include creating design packages, calculations, equipment specs, and BOMs; applying IEEE/NESC standards; supporting field inspections, client presentations, and QA/QC; and helping

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited program in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (or related) with 3 years of substation experience.
• Electrical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering Technology with ABET accreditation and successful FE exam with 3 years of substation experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Supports substation projects from the conceptual phase through completion.
• Prepares design packages including arrangement, protective relaying, control, and grounding.
• Develops substation calculations such as insulation, DC systems, cable sizing, and conduit fill.
• Prepares design sketches, estimates, BOMs, and equipment specifications.
• Applies IEEE, NESC, and other industry standards in design and QA/QC.
• Supports field inspections and client presentations; drives status visuals.
