Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Significant experience delivering complex software projects as a software engineer.
  • Strong leadership, mentorship, and people-management skills.
  • Startup environment experience preferred.
  • Autonomous robot software development is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Docker/Podman, Terraform, security protocols, elastic scale.

Job Title: Staff Software Engineering Manager

Department: Software Engineering

This position will lead a team of highly skilled software engineers, providing technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to drive the successful delivery of complex software projects. The individual will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, technical program managers, and stakeholders, to define technical strategies, set priorities, and ensure the team's adherence to engineering best practices. This position will require a strong technical background, excellent leadership skills, and a track record of building and scaling high-performing engineering teams.

Key Duties/Responsibilities
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership and guidance to a team of software engineers. Set technical direction, define best practices, and ensure the team's adherence to coding standards, architectural guidelines, and engineering processes.
  • Team Management: Build and lead a high-performing engineering team, including hiring, onboarding, mentoring, and professional development. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Project Management: Collaborate with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to define project goals, scope, and timelines. Drive the successful execution and delivery of complex software projects, balancing technical excellence, business objectives, and resource allocation.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, understand business needs, and translate them into technical solutions. Foster effective collaboration and communication within the team and with external teams.
  • Technical Problem Solving: Analyze complex technical problems and propose innovative solutions. Provide guidance and support to the team in overcoming technical challenges and ensuring the delivery of high-quality software solutions.
  • Stakeholder Management: Engage with stakeholders, including senior leaders and executives, to provide project updates, manage expectations, and ensure alignment on technical strategies and priorities.
  • Talent Development: Nurture and develop engineering talent through mentorship, coaching, and career development conversations. Provide opportunities for growth and advancement, and support the professional aspirations of team members.
  • Quality Assurance: Advocate for and enforce engineering best practices, including code reviews, testing strategies, and continuous integration. Drive a culture of quality and ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable software solutions.
  • Perform other related duties or specialized areas as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Proven experience in a technical leadership or management role, leading and managing software engineering teams.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and develop a high-performing team.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to set priorities, manage resources, and drive the successful execution and delivery of projects.
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the team
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • May assists in handling discipline of employees in accordance with company policy.
Required Skills/Abilities/Qualifications
  • Significant professional experience as a software engineer, with a track record of delivering complex software projects.
  • Strong technical expertise in one or more programming languages and technology stacks, such as Rust, C++, Python, or others
  • Great troubleshooting skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to navigate complex technical challenges and make sound decisions.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong commitment to quality, attention to detail, and continuous improvement.
  • In-depth understanding of software development methodologies, engineering best practices, and architectural patterns.
  • Strategic thinking and the ability to align technical initiatives with business goals.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and drive effective solutions.
  • Passion for technology, innovation, and continuous learning.
Preferred Skills/Abilities/Qualifications
  • Experience in a startup environment
  • Autonomous robot software development
  • Basic cloud computing technologies (Docker/Podman, Terraform, Security protocols, elastic scale) and embedded computing technologies (Ubuntu/Debian Linux, Systemd, Ostree)
Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of sitting/standing at a desk and working on a computer. The employee routinely is required to sit; stand, walk; talk and hear; use hands to keyboard
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs.

The pay range for this position is $253k - $309K + discretionary annual performance bonus . Pay is dependent on the applicant's relevant experience.
