Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Tax Accounts team to simplify the complexity of tax data across hundreds of agencies. You will own the full stack lifecycle from frontend to backend, building reliable APIs and data models in a highly regulated domain.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development experience and demonstrated staff-level technical leadership.
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects that deliver measurable customer impact at scale.
• Experience building scalable solutions with strong ownership of reliability, performance, and correctness.
• Comfort designing data models and APIs for a complex, rules-heavy domain (compliance/tax).
• Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate development and testing, with a culture of sharing best practices.

Responsabilités

• Design, build, and test systems behind employer and employee tax accounts, including registrations, authorizations, tax setup, and filings across jurisdictions.
• Build automation to interact with tax agencies and maintain accurate accounts, rates, and deposit schedules.
• Model complex rules into maintainable systems and own reliability and performance.
• Partner with Product, Design, Tax Ops, and PEO to turn customer pain into solutions and iterate.
