Job summary

Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Tax Accounts team. You will own the design and delivery of systems managing tax accounts across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring accurate data, reliable APIs, and scalable performance.

You will mentor peers and collaborate with Product, Design, Tax Operations, and PEO teams to turn customer pain into practical solutions. The role emphasizes technical craft with wide impact in a complex domain, including AI-enabled development practices.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development experience with staff-level leadership.
• Experience delivering multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems at scale.
• Experience building scalable solutions with strong ownership of reliability and performance.
• Comfort designing data models and APIs for a complex, rules-heavy domain (compliance, tax, payments).
• Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate development and testing, plus sharing best practices.
